That all changed when he met his wife, Galina, who recognized his creative potential. “She saw my drawings and attention to detail and inspired me to try my talents at jewelry. I didn't know anything about jewelry, nor did I have any previous training in it.”

Trusting Galina’s instincts, Soldier went to the largest jewelry plant in the Urals and asked for whatever position was available. Originally assigned as an electrician, he became the plant’s chief designer in less than a year. His superiors’ faith in his abilities proved well placed: Under his direction, the plant began to consistently win awards at Eastern European trade shows.

In his pieces, Soldier celebrates what he could have easily taken for granted growing up where he did: The beauty of Nature. “I think it really depends on individual experience,” Soldier says of his use of this recurring theme. “Nature becomes just another part of your daily vocabulary (in the mountains) in the same way that someone who grows up in a big city could take (that environment) for granted. It all depends on how you perceive the world around you. If you take it for granted, then it becomes very ordinary and mundane.”

Soldier’s engineering background gave him the technical knowledge and perspective that sets him apart from others in his field. “Historically you have a casted sculpture that is made of a single piece of metal. Each of my designs is made of several complex components that create a unique whole.” He explains.

And, because they have clothing for both females and males, everyone in your group can take turns breaking the monotony of lingering or getting over the fact that there was no room for you at the inn. Of course, if something you love at A. Turen is a bit snug or you literally cannot fit your chubby self into it at all, this might discourage you from actually going to the Meatball Shop or ordering seconds once you do get a seat. The bright side of this dour situation: Isn’t it best to know BEFORE you feast on all of those fats and carbs?
I first came across this shop during an event. My husband LOVES store parties because they allow him to drink, eat and shop ... three of his FAVORITE things ... without putting forth much of an effort.

I’m not usually fond of these soirées, but this one was a bit glitzier than usual. Not only were members of the storied Ronson/Jones clan milling about (both matriarch Ann Dexter Jones and daughter Charlotte Ronson have items in the store), but I also recognized Gene Pressman, of the infamous Barney’s founding family. “Whoever these people are, they are quite connected!” I gossiped to the hubby.

A day later, I received an email from a couple I had been quite friendly with in a previous lifetime, Edward and Jan Turen. The last name hadn’t rung a bell because we all knew each other so long ago; I needed this email to nudge the dormant brain cells awake. They had seen my picture on Patrick McMullan’s coverage of their daughter’s store party and were wondering if I was the same person they knew back in Miami.

“Oh my God!” I said to the hubby. “I know the parents of the girl who owns that shop we were at last night! We used to call them The Young Adorables because they were always so ... well ... ADORABLE!” I knew Edward and Jan as young newlyweds. They were both as beautiful as dolls and had flawless wardrobes. Neither was the type to have a hair out of place or a wayward thread. If they weren’t so damned nice, we might have hated their perfection.

I returned to the boutique because I had seen a lot of items that were really worth another look and I was certainly curious about Ashley. Seems she was brought up in Tenafly, NJ, graduated from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, hoping to be an actress, but changed her mind a few years later. The new career began when she painted over an old leather jacket in her closet, which led to painting over just about everything else she and her friends had lying around.

She took the leap into retail with a shop in her LES neighborhood. Quickly outgrowing that, she moved to her present location. “My first shop was a 350 sq. foot space on Ludlow St. I moved because I wanted to expand my vision.
On Tuesday, Alice Judelson opened her art filled, east side townhouse to host a private, multi-designer springtime trunk show. Our beautiful hostesses, Alice Judelson, Jane Holzer, Hilary Dick, and Flo Fulton were a warm reminder that summer is just around the corner. They wore lovely and bright scarves, caftans, jewelry and ponchos. All were perfect for a trip to St. Tropez or a summer in the Hamptons, making us all forget that outside there is still a chill in the air. Luckily, it is never too early to stock up!

The designers were all quite unique and complimentary to each other and absolutely lovely and fascinating women.

Courtney Moss from Glamourpuss NYC was there with her new Spring/Summer collection. Of course there is nobody better to model the new collection than Courtney herself, looking glamourous in her Water Lilly caftan and layers of pearl and silk necklaces. The collection consists of everything you will need for summer ranging from ponchos, caftans, skirts, tops, handbags, belts, scarves and jewelry all thoughtfully designed to be multifunctional yet lots of fun. I remember when Courtney Moss and Gigi Mortimer first launched Glamourpuss in 2009! Their Original Glamourpuss Fur Funnel in "golden" has gotten me through each winter ever since! It is amazing to see how much they have done with the brand in just a few short years.

Suzan Lee Paek, Founder and Creative Director of Jessica Grant Handbags flew in from California to be a part of the event. Her elegant collection of exotic skin handbags was quite impressive. In an array of colors, these fashionable yet durable and functionable handbags truly are "wearable art." I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot of these bags on Park Avenue this spring and summer.

What about those high heels that are impossible to walk in? People BEG to be put on lists in order to be lucky enough to spend a fortune for the right to NOT be able to walk. Of course, in order to make people want what is ultimately unnecessary, let alone willing to pay enormous amounts for such items, it helps if the piece is extraordinarily well made and the materials used are ULTRA-luxe. Add all these together and, instead of folly, one actually has (hopefully) assumed an investment, a work of art, a potential heirloom.

With that in mind, let me introduce you to MZIA BEKURAIDZE, the force behind the ZIA COUTURE label. The highly-educated (Harvard for business communication, finance and management and NYU for design), fine-featured beauty toiled for years managing flagship stores for Prada, Valentino and Donna Karan Collection. Working in the trenches, she became very aware of what the customers wanted. “I used to hear from ladies all the time saying, ‘I love this gown or dress and would not mind spending a high volume of money, but I just wish you had a shawl or wrap on this level to go with it.’ Mzia relates. “I realized that I was losing sales because of this missing link and I, as a manager, would have better success if I had something versatile that completed evening wear.”

The missing link, according to Mzia, was high-caliber beading. This was something all the other evening wrap options…traditionally made of fur, cashmere and organza… didn’t have. She then decided that the beading should be on the finest lace in the world. Two years ago, she contacted French lace-maker Sophie Hallette, who makes lace for Valentino, Prada, Armani, Eli Saab, Bradley Mischka and Carolina Herrera Haute Couture. Hallette most recently designed and created the lace for Kate Middletonʼs Alexander McQueen wedding gown.

Each piece takes countless hours to produce.” Mzia explains. “Honestly, if my pieces were at established designer stores, the prices would be doubled.
Main Street in East Hampton is a continuation of Route 27, going from Southampton to Montauk. It is essentially your introduction to East Hampton, making its present state even more despicable. Bridgehampton is replete with open stores, looking very inviting, some of which are East Hampton deserters.

With rents having gone sky high, many of the single owner's much needed stores have fled. Gone are the newsstand, the stationery store, the music store (I fear iPods interfered with that business as well). Gone is the shoe store (it moved around the corner). Gone are some of the antique stores, the toy store. There are three jewelers led by Tiffany and three cashmere stores (Magaschoni, Cashmere Hampton, and Christopher Fisher). Do we need all of those? Ralph Lauren has nicely covered both sides of the street and stays open all year. J.Crew has a store for all men, women, children, and that is open all year, fortunately. Need to get your shoes repaired? Find a friend who lives in NYC as well as EH. There are no shoe repair places around. There is a cineplex and a fun restaurant called Rowdy Hall with burgers, beers, mussels and lots of goodies. It is open all year and great for before or after the movies.
Check out the "closed for the season" stores; some may come back, some may not. Pop ups don't belong in East Hampton!

The World Politics course I am auditing (which starts at 10am promptly every Tuesday morning and is taught by the fabulous Ralph Buutjens, of NYU) is held on 42nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenue. Seems I am always in a rush, which only makes for more taxi rides (poor excuse I know).

Fifth Avenue's transformation is quite evident. It has become very catholic (and not the St. Patrick's Catholic), no longer the glamour parade it once was. Now, there is something for everyone, at every price. This is not necessarily bad; just different.

Fred Astaire might not have danced to the Easter Parade down Fifth Avenue; they might have changed venues. For fun items at a price, shopping Uniglo is a must ... and now Joe Fresh is coming as well ... they have terrific down parkas that roll into a small case and are perfect for flying back and forth from New York to Florida! The parka are $49 each; I bought two, a hot pink and a black, and might add a third! Sadly Joe Fresh is a pop up shop; he is on Madison in the 80s as well, so I say Bravo.

Mixing the good inexpensive with designer clothing is what it is all about.

In my newly recognized, although not fully accepted, unemployed state, it comes down to supervised bridge play at the Regency Whist Club at 15 East 67 Street, a smashing-looking old-age building.

I imagine it's a great club to belong to (fortunately non-members can take lessons there) as I love the feeling of the club and its members, young and old.

Walking down Madison Avenue to play I mused over the loss of some stores. Sadly, Yves St. Laurent is gone, as is Sonia Rykiel, Krizia, and Givenchy.

But in their places are some very exciting stores, and the glamour is returning to Madison Avenue!

Hurrah!!!!
