When it comes to INVESTING in fashion, the trick is to find something that is not only well-made, but manages to be both on-trend and timeless. Go and buy all the flowered pants and mullet skirts you want, but if you actually spend a lot of money on something that SCREAMS the year and season of its popularity…well, you are obviously blessed with more expendable cash and closet space than most.

According to every breathless proclamation, the HOT item to own for fall is ANYTHING leather. Speaking of “hot”, the more fashion-forward celebs have been wearing “Summer Leather”…which is quite brave, considering the summer’s average temps. Then again, it’s quite easy to wear uncomfortable items (hello sky-high heels and/or frothy frocks in winter with NO stockings!) when you go quickly from (air conditioned/heated) residence to (air conditioned/heated) car to (air conditioned/heated) event, back to car…unlike the hoi-polloi who have to actually deal with whatever Mother Nature has tossed about and must rely on public transportation or walking!

A great way to go with a trend, yet not be TRENDY, is to find small-scale designers, dressmakers and tailors. If you like their sensibility, you’ll end up with a collection of items that you won’t see on others, really fit in with YOUR look (not the one dictated for EVERYONE that season) and, in most cases, will be fitted on you. It behooves the independent designer to make your look perfect because YOU are the advertising they can’t afford; they can’t make up their losses with perfume and accessories and they’re not looking for write-offs.

That’s the spirit that made me a regular customer of Carla Dawn Behrle. I first discovered her in the late 90s, when I wandered into her small TriBeCa shop, which she had from 1997 until 2002. “I needed a place where I could both manufacture the line (which was represented by Patricia Field at the time)and have a laboratory so I could try new things.” Behrle says of that period. “I also wanted to have a closer relationship with my customers. I had been selling to stores all over the world, and was missing that direct connection.”

Boy, did I connect with her! But, whatever I spent, however much I bought, it was a great fashion investment because I still have every item and I still wear them! Therefore, I can personally attest to their quality and their classic styling. I even have a mullet skirt from her from all those years ago and, believe me, it’s far more attractive than those horrid ones I’m seeing everywhere now! This woman is a master tailor.

Since 2005, Behrle’s been specializing in custom work. Being able to work so closely with her clientele has influenced her line, which she describes as “modern and elegant, with a bit of an edge... and includes a lot of the detailing that I love putting into my private work.” Behrle understands the way a garment needs to fit and how it wears over time.“Because of this, the way I design and pattern each piece is very, very different than a designer who works primarily in fabric and makes a few leather items. The patterns are cut to mold to, and work with the body.”

Most of her work is SO custom, she does very limited editions of 5 to 6 pieces per line style. These are available on a first come basis. “Fine leather has to be cut one piece at a time, by hand, and each piece is constructed individually. It is the antithesis of mass production.” Behrle clarifies.

The Bacon candle being a good example of this. Along with other off-beat scents, such as Campfire, New Mitt and Fresh Cut Grass, MANCAN CANDLES was created by a 13-year-old Ohio boy whose company motto is “One candle; one meal.” That’s because the cans that the candles are in are recycled soup cans. “It’s a non-profit where they take the soup from the cans and donate to a local soup kitchen.” Libonate explains.
That all changed when he met his wife, Galina, who recognized his creative potential. “She saw my drawings and attention to detail and inspired me to try my talents at jewelry. I didn't know anything about jewelry, nor did I have any previous training in it.”

Trusting Galina’s instincts, Soldier went to the largest jewelry plant in the Urals and asked for whatever position was available. Originally assigned as an electrician, he became the plant’s chief designer in less than a year. His superiors’ faith in his abilities proved well placed: Under his direction, the plant began to consistently win awards at Eastern European trade shows.

In his pieces, Soldier celebrates what he could have easily taken for granted growing up where he did: The beauty of Nature. “I think it really depends on individual experience,” Soldier says of his use of this recurring theme. “Nature becomes just another part of your daily vocabulary (in the mountains) in the same way that someone who grows up in a big city could take (that environment) for granted. It all depends on how you perceive the world around you. If you take it for granted, then it becomes very ordinary and mundane.”

Soldier’s engineering background gave him the technical knowledge and perspective that sets him apart from others in his field. “Historically you have a casted sculpture that is made of a single piece of metal. Each of my designs is made of several complex components that create a unique whole.” He explains.

And, because they have clothing for both females and males, everyone in your group can take turns breaking the monotony of lingering or getting over the fact that there was no room for you at the inn. Of course, if something you love at A. Turen is a bit snug or you literally cannot fit your chubby self into it at all, this might discourage you from actually going to the Meatball Shop or ordering seconds once you do get a seat. The bright side of this dour situation: Isn’t it best to know BEFORE you feast on all of those fats and carbs?
I first came across this shop during an event. My husband LOVES store parties because they allow him to drink, eat and shop ... three of his FAVORITE things ... without putting forth much of an effort.

I’m not usually fond of these soirées, but this one was a bit glitzier than usual. Not only were members of the storied Ronson/Jones clan milling about (both matriarch Ann Dexter Jones and daughter Charlotte Ronson have items in the store), but I also recognized Gene Pressman, of the infamous Barney’s founding family. “Whoever these people are, they are quite connected!” I gossiped to the hubby.

A day later, I received an email from a couple I had been quite friendly with in a previous lifetime, Edward and Jan Turen. The last name hadn’t rung a bell because we all knew each other so long ago; I needed this email to nudge the dormant brain cells awake. They had seen my picture on Patrick McMullan’s coverage of their daughter’s store party and were wondering if I was the same person they knew back in Miami.

“Oh my God!” I said to the hubby. “I know the parents of the girl who owns that shop we were at last night! We used to call them The Young Adorables because they were always so ... well ... ADORABLE!” I knew Edward and Jan as young newlyweds. They were both as beautiful as dolls and had flawless wardrobes. Neither was the type to have a hair out of place or a wayward thread. If they weren’t so damned nice, we might have hated their perfection.

I returned to the boutique because I had seen a lot of items that were really worth another look and I was certainly curious about Ashley. Seems she was brought up in Tenafly, NJ, graduated from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, hoping to be an actress, but changed her mind a few years later. The new career began when she painted over an old leather jacket in her closet, which led to painting over just about everything else she and her friends had lying around.

She took the leap into retail with a shop in her LES neighborhood. Quickly outgrowing that, she moved to her present location. “My first shop was a 350 sq. foot space on Ludlow St. I moved because I wanted to expand my vision. Our beautiful hostesses, Alice Judelson, Jane Holzer, Hilary Dick, and Flo Fulton were a warm reminder that summer is just around the corner. They wore lovely and bright scarves, caftans, jewelry and ponchos. All were perfect for a trip to St. Tropez or a summer in the Hamptons, making us all forget that outside there is still a chill in the air. Luckily, it is never too early to stock up!
The collection consists of everything you will need for summer ranging from ponchos, caftans, skirts, tops, handbags, belts, scarves and jewelry all thoughtfully designed to be multifunctional yet lots of fun. I remember when Courtney Moss and Gigi Mortimer first launched Glamourpuss in 2009! It is amazing to see how much they have done with the brand in just a few short years.
What about those high heels that are impossible to walk in? People BEG to be put on lists in order to be lucky enough to spend a fortune for the right to NOT be able to walk. Of course, in order to make people want what is ultimately unnecessary, let alone willing to pay enormous amounts for such items, it helps if the piece is extraordinarily well made and the materials used are ULTRA-luxe. Add all these together and, instead of folly, one actually has (hopefully) assumed an investment, a work of art, a potential heirloom.

With that in mind, let me introduce you to MZIA BEKURAIDZE, the force behind the ZIA COUTURE label. The highly-educated (Harvard for business communication, finance and management and NYU for design), fine-featured beauty toiled for years managing flagship stores for Prada, Valentino and Donna Karan Collection. Working in the trenches, she became very aware of what the customers wanted. “I used to hear from ladies all the time saying, ‘I love this gown or dress and would not mind spending a high volume of money, but I just wish you had a shawl or wrap on this level to go with it.’ Mzia relates. “I realized that I was losing sales because of this missing link and I, as a manager, would have better success if I had something versatile that completed evening wear.”

The missing link, according to Mzia, was high-caliber beading. This was something all the other evening wrap options…traditionally made of fur, cashmere and organza… didn’t have. She then decided that the beading should be on the finest lace in the world. Two years ago, she contacted French lace-maker Sophie Hallette, who makes lace for Valentino, Prada, Armani, Eli Saab, Bradley Mischka and Carolina Herrera Haute Couture. Hallette most recently designed and created the lace for Kate Middletonʼs Alexander McQueen wedding gown.

Each piece takes countless hours to produce.” Mzia explains. “Honestly, if my pieces were at established designer stores, the prices would be doubled. Nearly every piece is one-of-a-kind and can be special-ordered, insofar as colors, length, width, and details, such as fringes or ruffles. Then, it takes 4 to 5 weeks to make each shawl.
