Wednesday night, DPC headed over to Charlotte Moss’ wonderful townhouse in the East 70s (see NYSD HOUSE), where the Museum at FIT held its annual Couture Council Summer Party ... “It was a hot night in New York, and because the party was opened up into Charlotte’s garden, it wasn’t air-conditioned. Nobody cared; it was relaxed and chatty, with lots of ice for the drinks.
Madame Moss was standing in the foyer by the staircase greeting guests along with Valerie Steele (see NYSD HOUSE), the Museum’s director. The cocktail reception was hosted by Dr. Joyce Brown, President of FIT, Yaz Hernandez, Liz Peek, Sarah Wolfe, Couture Council Chairs, along with Steele and Moss. A sweet weekday August evening in New York.”

“While rooted in scholarship, the exhibitions at The Museum at FIT are creative and fun. Further, the museum's resources and programs serve the FIT community at all levels – students, faculty members, visiting scholars, industry professionals, and the fashion-loving public at large.
Attracting an annual 100,000 visitors from around the world, the museum's innovative exhibitions continue to earn critical acclaim and global recognition. And we are still New York’s only museum specializing in the art of fashion. The Museum at FIT is an important part of FIT, which I am proud to say, has now been a leader in fashion education for more than 60 years.” — FIT President, Dr. Joyce F. Brown |

The Couture Council is a membership group of fashion enthusiasts that help support the exhibitions and programs of The Museum at FIT. Their Annual Summer Party kicked off the fundraising drive that culminates in the annual Couture Council luncheon honoring the recipient of the 2009 Couture Council Awards for Artistry of Fashion. The much anticipated award luncheon is always the first event of New York’s Fall Fashion Week. This year, the winner of the award is Dries Van Noten, who will make a rare trip to New York to receive this coveted honor.
And if you haven’t been to the museum and you like fashion, go check it out. There are over 50,000 garments and accessories dating from the 18th century to the present. Right now, there is a special exhibit called Isabel Toledo: Fashion from the Inside Out. It showcases about 70 looks by fashion designer (and 2008 Couture Council Artistry of Fashion Award recipient) Isabel Toledeo.
Featured in the exhibit is the lemongrass yellow dress and coat ensemble that Michelle Obama wore on Inauguration Day. Best of all, the museum is FREE to the public, so it’s the perfect indoor activity on a hot, summer day for anyone from Recessionista to Fashionista.
