Summer Hair - Going the Length

Getting braided at Barretts Braid Bar!
My favorite summer trend this year isn’t maxi dresses, nautical stripes, or color blocking. This summer, it’s all about hair! Going to a salon for a simple wash and blow dry is so last season. If you are going to spend the time and money to go to a top salon then go ALL out. From uptown to downtown, it’s about having fun. Uptown Girl I had the opportunity to try out John Barrett Salon’s new Barrett’s Braid Bar. We aren’t talking the DIY low ponytail, going-to-the-gym type of braid here. Choose from a book of every style braid imaginable and unimaginable. Or leave it to the professionals and let your stylist suggest something for you. Braids are the perfect accessory to complete a summer look – whether it’s formal, cocktail, or just casual. Since I was spending the day shopping in Bergdorfs (John Barrett’s is located in the Penthouse) and then going for dinner with friends, I went for a beachy look.

From Boring to Glam! Getting the full package, which includes a shampoo, blow dry, and braid, takes about an hour and costs $120.
Jay Ree gave me big waves and then worked in an intricate side braid. And of course, no John Barrett appointment would be complete without a makeup touchup by Mercedes Shapiro. With the shampoo, blow dry and braid, I had just as much fun getting it done as I did wearing it! Braids starts at only $45, so the John Barrett Salon experience is totally accessible and the perfect way to stand out at a summer party. So next time you are shopping with your girlfriends at BG, don’t be the ladies who lunch, be ladies who braid! Call John Barrett Salon at 212.872.2700 or visit www.JohnBarrett.com.

Downtown Chic Another summer trend is long, long hair. I’ve had long hair forever. But, for those who don’t and want it ASAP, head downtown to Three Squares Studio. While sitting in the studio getting my cut and highlights with owner Jordan Blackmore, I noticed other girls (lots of other girls) getting hair extension. Maybe I never knew how popular this was because it’s impossible to detect and people don’t seem talk about it, but extensions are certainly the next big thing in hair.

I chatted with stylist Karla Van Rijs, who is certified in Platinum Seamless Extensions. It takes about two hours and then lasts for two months. It costs between $300-$1500 and they use customizable real hair that is completely touchable (and invisible) and does not damage your hair. Allison McClellan, another stylist at Three Square Studio, specializes in a type of extensions called Great Lengths Extensions. These are individual extensions that allow you to customize strands and cost around $2500. It’s also a great way for brunettes to try out a few highlights or to test out that blonde ombre look (think Drew Barrymore) without actually coloring your hair. Both are very popular with Three Squares Studio celebrity clientele.

| Another new hair extension trend that Allison and Karla are doing a lot of lately is Feather Extensions. This is a fun and easy way to add a pop of color to your hair and looks very cool. Flip through any magazine and you’ll notice it's popular right now with the music industry types and Hollywood set. Feather extensions last up to six weeks and cost $100.
