Scully & Scully Hosts Herend Porcelain’s Master Artist from Hungary at Two-Day Signing Event

Master Artist László Tartó
Herend is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of porcelain. Founded in 1826, the Hungarian company produces exquisite, entirely hand painted china dinnerware as well as the easily recognized, in-demand collectibles: animal figurines that are covered with fishnet design and 24K gold accents. Herend quickly became a favored brand among rulers, historical figures, and artists. Today, it is well-known around the world and continues in their ultra modern facility to make one of the finest handcrafted hard paste porcelains.

On Wednesday and Thursday, October 6 and 7, from 11 am- 5 pm, Scully & Scully, which carries the largest collection of Herend Porcelain in the United States, will host one of the manufacturer’s four Master Artists László Tartó, a graduate of Hungary’s Fischer Mór Porcelain-Making Trade School. Not only will Tartó conduct painting demonstrations, he will sign limited edition and unique Herend pieces. This is the first time in over 15 years a Herend Master Artist has appeared Stateside.

The company’s Master Artist Program is rooted in Europe’s 15th century Guild System and practices porcelain making traditions used more than 600 years ago. The rigorous program trains new artists and preserves traditional techniques in a system designed so that only the best trained, most skilled and adept artists reach the pinnacle designation of “masters of the craft.” The title is revered by professions and by the public. Of Herend’s 385 artists, only 19 have earned this merit and only 4 have becomes Master Artists.

During a visit to the Great Exhibition of 1851, also known as the Crystal Palace exhibition, Queen Victoria admired then commissioned a Herend dinner service designed with butterflies and flowers for Windsor Castle. Re-named the “Queen Victoria” pattern, it is among Herend’s top-selling patterns today.

Another one of their top selling patterns “Rothschild Bird” was created in 1860, for the famous Baron de Rothschild family. The design was inspired by a legend about the Baroness Rothschild’s pearl necklace. Although there are many versions of the story, most believe that one day the Baroness, who was strolling in her garden, discovered that her beloved pearl necklace was not on her neck. She was distraught, looking for it to no avail, until the family gardener returned the necklace to her after retrieving it from a tree branch where birds had carried it and were playing with it.

In celebration of its 150th Anniversary, special "Rothschild Bird" pieces will be available, along with a stunning array of artist event merchandise not typically available in the U.S. According to a survey of bridal consultants of the top 20 bridal registry stores across the country, “Queen Victoria” and “Rothschild Bird” are the most popular Herend patterns with brides registering for dinnerware.

Newly released in 2010 Herend’s animal figurines, which include Dragonfly on Grass, Sea Urchin, Hermit Crab, Little Bird on Log, Bunny with Bow Tie, and Rubber Ducky will be available during the event. Scully & Scully also carries a large collection of figurines including cats, dogs, sea and African wildlife, tigers, horses, giraffes, bears, elephants and others in a variety of colors. With something to entice Herend enthusiasts of every genre, the expansive assortment of show goods will also include art sculptures from Herend’s acclaimed limited-edition Reserve Collection.

Famous collectors of Herend porcelain include Emperor Akihito of Japan, Queen Elisabeth II, Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, Princess Diana, Paul Newman, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Celine Dion.

Tartó has represented Herend at many prestigious events around the world. While his specialty is palette-painting of flowers, he also excels at extraordinary assignments. Particularly notable is a tea set made of sugar that he hand painted in Herend’s famous and colorful Queen Victoria pattern for the Culinary Olympics. In recognition of his outstanding and diverse achievements, Herend has awarded Mr. Tartó the Manufactory’s Prize for Professionalism.
