Richie Rich’s Graffiti Chic

by Michèle Gerber Klein

Rewind: On September 9 at 9: 00 PM Richie Rich, ex Club Kid and late of Heatherette, debuted his first OMO collection with a show that was just that and witty to boot. Encompassing a panoply of sexual personae worthy of a Camille Paglia vision, it opened with ballet dancers in petal pale tutus followed by blond DJ Mia Motta in a music duel with vixen-like violinist Catlin Mole and, finally, Tinsley Mortimer dance- prancing triumphantly down the run way, in turquoise eye shadow, a tall blond beehive, mile high stilettos and a large pink bow. It closed with a series of abashed and truculent male models in bondage and “guy” liner led by girls clad in what might have been either bikinis or under ware. (It was unclear at least to this observer if the latter sequence was a presentation of a new line of clothing, an essay on desire or, an arch commentary on the sociological dilemma of American men.)

As a surprise finale, Ellen DeGeneres emerged from a cloud of silver sparkles dressed in a minuscule silver blue ribboned top hat, a large, loose silver pant suit and lace up ankle high sneakers to guide Richie in his signature news boy cap to well deserved, standing applause. These were led by Ellen’s wife Portia de Rosso strategically positioned mid- front row.

Sandwiched between the dramatic end pieces was a sequence of fluid, floating, flouncy, sexy and louche, giggly and girly dresses reminiscent of a Barbie gone wicked, or to quote Richie, who listed as inspiration Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Madonna’s Sex Book and Auntie Mame: “A morsel of candy mixed in with bath house”. Among the key details: blue gingham edged with pink ribbon, wide zipper back details revealed and last season’s peripatetic Lanvin ruffles applied this time also — to the back. Some of the platform soles of the stilettos were higher than the model’s calves were wide.

Bold faced names in attendance included: Nicole Miller, The Veronica’s, photographer Timothy Greenfield Saunders, sitting next to me in the front row, madly snapping away, Fern Mallis, AKA 47 and Lady K, Andre Borteen, wafe like Audry Kitching cuddling her stuffed brown teddy bear, Apollonia, Edie Lush, Mia Morgan, Jake Bright, and a beaming Zelda Kaplan.

The show’s executive producer was Keri Ingvarsson from The King Collective. A great kick off to Fashion Week it was all simply, just fabulous fun!
