Oscar de la Renta - Spring 2011

5:30 PM and I catch up with my mail, resting after several meetings and a wonderful Isaac Mizrahi show in the Lincoln Center Fashion Week tent. Time dress, make-up and comb my hair before heading down to Oscar’s 6:00 PM show on Park Avenue and 63rd in the former Christian Science church. Suddenly I hear an incredible bang, a thunder clap that makes me jump. Running to the window I cannot see outside. The heavens are dumping floods of water. There are bolts of lightning. Am I Fashion Victim enough to brave the elements for my all-time favorite designer? You bet! Out come the black Wellies and the plastic-coated leopard Dolce and Gabbana trench. Gritting my teeth, I prepare to brave the elements. Miraculously, by the time I am pulled together, the intense ten-minute storm has abated. A taxi appears on cue. Racing across Park Avenue into the building I am greeted by a full house. New York fashionistas are not sissies!

Oscar’s troops are out in full force. I sit between Toni Goodale and my pal Hilary Geary Ross. Mercedes Bass, Donna Acquavella, Lynn Nesbit, Pauline Pitt, Aggie Gund, Nancy Kissinger, Barbara Walters and Oscar’s chic wife, Annette are all in their seats. As the lights dim, a parade of elegant spring ensembles pass by in floral prints with crochet cardigans and embroidered blossoms. A beautiful cocktail dress with an illusion top catches my eye. Skirts are just past the knee. There are a series of dresses in a window-pane check, a stunning black and white print dress with a snappy cardigan, a three quarter black and white cardigan over white trousers. I love a taupe linen cocktail dress, its skirt embroidered with flowers. Flats and some platform shoes look sporty and casual, just right for spring.

The evening dresses that capture my fancy are a white gown with black polka dots, a strapless confection with a full skirt, not wildly practical, but oh-so pretty and a sleeveless black lace variation with a tulle skirt. There were lovely fabrics like a luminous green with black birds and embroidered white jackets with twinkling trousers. Green and white pin-striped pants in seersucker looked sporty. Some of the evening gowns were so voluminous that one would need a separate room for storage. An elaborate pleated and puffed pink bolero will be stunning in a photo-spread. Flower-strewn gowns will surely be entrance makers at this spring’s dance at the New York Botanical Garden. As Oscar came out, his ladies rose to their feet, offering a resounding ovation, stronger than any thunder. They adore him as much as they treasure his creativity and taste.
