Spring Shopping at Doubles

by Roger Webster

Kathryn Beach from Baby Bespoke.

Doubles, the private club in the Sherry Netherland Hotel in the heart of Manhattan, transformed itself into a chic Shopping Boutique last week. The club’s Guiding Light, Wendy Carduner, decided it was time to think about spring style. She asked chef Steven Mellina to create a menu befitting the occasion for the Buffet Luncheon, which, by the way, they serve every day. Next, she had the tables removed from the Dining Room and invited high quality merchants to display their wares.

Doubles is extremely versatile. Wait until you see it glowing, glittering and candlelit for its 34th Anniversary Gala Celebration on May 13th. Champagne corks popping, hundreds of balloons and black-tied and begowned guests rocking the dance floor to the hot music of Peter Duchin and His Orchestra. The New York Times calls Duchin a living “landmark.” He has played Inaugural Balls and White House dinners for every President since Lyndon B. Johnson.

Courtney Moss. Gigi Mortimer.

New York Social Diary Shopping Diary member Glamourpuss NYC was literally mobbed as soon as the doors opened. Founders Courtney Moss and Gigi Mortimer were selling pretty Pucci-esque Summer Ponchos.

“Printed with four unique designs created exclusively for them by Bermudian artist Dana Cooper and hand batiked in Bali, each is an original piece of art, designed to punch up your wardrobe pool side, beachside or out on the town. Check it out on the Shopping Diary next door.

Baby Bespoke’s Kathryn Beach and Lisa Manice ... Baby Bespoke booties.

Kathryn Beach, Lisa Manice and Lyndsie Boss were there for Baby Bespoke. The most gorgeous baby clothes I have ever seen and all in perfectly precious cashmere.

As president of the new company Beach says, “The idea came to me while searching for elegantly beautiful, yet functional cashmere knits for my son and daughter and I realized that the market did not provide the type of garments I was seeking.”

Lisa Selby and Greg Kelly. Lisa Selby.

Lisa Selby was the perfect model to represent Myra Couture’s “Chanel” type jackets and dresses. Not a bit out of place, Greg Kelly, the Marine-turned-journalist son of NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, and co-host on Ch. 5's "Good Day New York,” agreed.

Christina Addison and her Fine Jewelry Design had a shop on Double’s “Main Street.” Addison developed her love of jewelry from her grandmother, a collector of beautiful jewelry and personal client of Harry Winston. She refined her taste working for Bergdorf Goodman, Chanel Fine Jewelry and Sotheby's.

Christina Addison. Susan Nappa.

Across the way was Susan Nappa and her items from Proverbial Knits, including cashmere ruffle wraps from Magaschoni wraps, Satin ruffle jackets, silk taffeta shawls and modal cotton scarves from Italy.

Belle McIntyre was there with her Mad Hatters Spring 2010 Collection. This is Belle’s high season with the upcoming Central Park Conservancy Women’s Committee’s Frederick Law Olmstead Luncheon on May 5th, not to mention the Kentucky Derby on May Day.
